Germany calling for Berbatov
German giants Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen are locked in a battle to sign Manchester United outcast Dimitar Berbatov.Berbatov is out of favour at Old Trafford and could be set to leave the champions. Starsport understands Bayern officials travelled to Manchester earlier this week to discuss a deal for the Bulgarian striker. Bayern have identified Berbatov as a replace- ment for Croatian forward Ivica Olic, who has told the club he will leave the Allianz Arena in the summer. But Berbatov’s former club Leverkusen are also keen to lure him back and offer the United record signing an escape route from Old Trafford. Berbatov, 30, has been told by his manager Sir Alex Ferguson that United will trigger the option of a 12-month extension to his current contract, which expires in June. Ferguson would prefer to keep Berbatov until the end of the season. But the chance of banking around £5m by selling him this month could prompt United to cash in. It is understood Berbatov jetted to Germany yesterday to hold talks with both clubs.
